Our Story

Over the last three years, the CBJJF has experienced some major organizational changes. Mainly, Owner John Davies announced the resignation of his Event Manager and confirmed he would be taking a step back from running the CBJJF.

This is where our long-term volunteer and brown belt Clayton Bundschuh (and his wife, Sandy) came into the picture. John entrusted them with planning, organizing and running events for the year. After 4 successful events, Clayton and Sandy purchased the CBJJF from John Davies in March 2020.

Unfortunately, this new ownership took place 1 week prior to the Global Pandemic Shut Down and operations were forced to cease until further notice. Although this timing was incredibly disappointing, fast-forward two years and 2022 showed great promise for the CBJJF and the BJJ Community.

Under new ownership, Clayton and Sandy dusted off the CBJJF mats and ran an exciting event in Red Deer, Alberta. The 2022 Alberta Provincial Open not only reached maximum capacity during Normal Registration, the demand to compete resulted in expanded registration and allowed the CBJJF to host approximately 450 spectators and 550 individual competitors (running ~800 matches).

Clayton and Sandy are still overwhelmed by the support the CBJJF received from the BJJ Community and remain eager to make improvements to the CBJJF Athlete Experience.

As a team of only two: Clayton (a Laboratory Team Lead at a BC Hospital) and Sandy (Human Resources Business Partner in a Digital Services & Print Industry) are not only committed to their regular full-time jobs, as well as their growing family, they are also highly dedicated to the CBJJF's future growth. Join these two at any upcoming event and check out the exciting and fierce competition!

“We aspire to provide Athletes with a space where they can own their sport and create positive and memorable experiences. Thank you for all your support and we look forward to seeing you on the mats.”
